Past Members
Pedro Cordoba (bass, guitars, backing vocals): Pedro had an extensive experience playing both in several rock and pop bands and as session musician before he joined Mascarada. He studied classical guitar and later moved to bass. He joined the band as bass player, but he also played spanish, acoustic and electric guitars. He was one of the founding members, along with Juan and Daniel Mares, and he wrote some material, specially in the early days of the band. He was a very competent musician, probably one of the best ever played in the band. His style was both powerful and flexible, ranging from the hard rock to jazz. As composer, he had a strong taste for celtic music and tunes, as was featured in his earlier compositions ("Irlanda" and "La Danza", both composed well before joining Mascarada). After marrying in early 1989 he left the group and the music.
Miguel Angel Blanco (guitars, baking vocals): Miguel joined Mascarada a month after its founding, when he was just 17 years old. He had not previous professional experience, but was heavy influenced by the bluesmen and jazz guitar players. He stayed with the band for just two weeks, and then left for personal reasons. After leaving Mascarada, Miguel was out of the music business for about five years, and then began to play again with some rock bands in Madrid.
Carlos Mostoles (guitars): Carlos joined Mascarada just a week after Miguel Angel Blanco's leaving. He was then 19 years old, and was previously in a rhythm 'n' blues band called "Blues Eristov" (from which also came other members of Mascarada, as Carmelo Sancho and Iñaki Hercilla). Carlos was very influenced by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, and this was very clear in the way he played, specially in the slow solos. Carlos was part of Mascarada until 1991, being the third most lasting member of the band after Juan and Daniel Mares. Nevertheless, his apportation as composer was not very extensive. In 1991, after having some differences with some of the other member of the band, Carlos had to leave Mascarada. .
Jose Luis Montero (drums): Jose Montero had played with Pedro Cordoba in several bands. Early in 1988 Mascarada was not able to find a siutable drummer, and Pedro called Jose to play in a demo they were preparing. After the recording was finished, the band offered Jose the permanent place as drummer, but he was not able to accept as he had then other compromises. Some time later, in early 1989, after Carmelo Sancho was forced to left, the band called again Jose to be the permanent drummer of Mascarada, and this time he accepted. Nevertheless, he was not for long with the band. When Pedro was fired some time later, Jose became to feel increasingly uncomfortable and finally left the group. Jose was a very talented drummer, with Simon Phillips and Bill Brufford as his main influences. After leaving Mascarada, he retired from music for some time, and just a year ago, he began to play again as session musician, and he is now searching to form a new band.
Jesus Tapias (drums, backing vocals): Jesus tapias was member of Mascarada for only three weeks before being replaced by Carmelo Sancho. He came from a rock band, and was very rock oriented in his playing style, so he didn't really fit in the group. After leaving Mascarada he has been playing with a number of rock bands in Madrid.
Carmelo Sancho (drums): Carmelo was the drummer in "Blues Eristov" the band from which Carlos Mostoles also came. Carlos called Carmelo when the band seemed unable to find a suitable drummer. Carmelo was a solid player, and gave the band the stability needed for its first months of existence. Sadly, at the begining of 1989 he began to have some personal problems and was forced to leave the group. After leaving Mascarada, he continued playing with a number of other rock groups until the present.
Telmo Hervias (lights, live sound, ass. engineer): Even when Telmo is not a musician, and has never been officially a member of the band, he is the provervial "sixth member" (and later the provervial "third member") of Mascarada. Telmo began to work with the band in early 1988 as live sound engineer and light operator, and continued working with Mascarada until the splitting in 1991. Then he became the assistant engineer in OOH! Studios, and as such was responsible in great part of the second tape from the band, "The Tower (and other strange places)" .
Iñaki Hercilla (guest musician: bass, backing vocals): As Telmo, Iñaki was never an official member of Mascarada, but as he played with the band for almost nine months, and played in most of the tracks in the band's first tape ("Restos del Amanecer"-1990), he deserves a place here. Iñaki was a close friend of Carlos Mostoles, and both played together in "Blues Eristov" before Carlos joined Mascarada. Iñaki was playing bass with "Los Locos", a pop-rock band in 1989 when Pedro Cordoba left Mascarada and the band called him to temporarly play bass in some live concerts that were already scheduled. Iñaki eventually continued playing with mascarada until 1990, when Vicente guillen took over the place. Some time later, when Mascarada was preparing his first demo tape "Restos del Amanecer" in 1990, Iñaki was called again to play three of the four tracks included (Vicente Guillen only played in "Noviembre"). Iñaki continued playing with "Los Locos" for some time, and later he went with a number of pop groups.
Francisco Javier "Fran" García (drums, percussion, rhythm boxes): Before joining Mascarada, Fran played drums with "Andromeda", a progressive band which worked between 1986 and 1989. Fran joined Mascarada to replace Jose Luis Montero, and from the first moment he became one of the most active members of the band. Fran's influences came mainly from the great progressive drummers, including Bill Brufford and Carl Palmer. He added a new strength to the band's sound and gave a more solid background. He was also very involved in the arrangements, and for the first time included assorted percussions. From early 1991, the interests of Fran and those of Juan and Daniel Mares began to diverge, as Fran wanted to look for commercial success, basically giving a more "commercial" taste to the band's music, something that Juan and Daniel strongly avoided. Finally in May 1991 came the final rupture and Fran and Vicente Guillen (bass) left the band for new pastures. Fran went to play with David Aladro (ex-Galadriel) in his then still embryonic band tentatively called "Noviembre" (later "Abner"), but he had to leave some weeks later due to musical incompatibilities. After leaving "Noviembre" he had a long association with the also ex-Galadriel Manuel Macias, but nothing was born from that union, and finally Fran left him to play in some rock and AOR bands. He is currently semi-retired, playing only for fun.
Javier Buyo (bass, guitars, backing vocals): Javier was a member of Mascarada only for two weeks in October 1989. He was 21 years old, and had not previous experience. He played several instruments, including bass, guitars, keyboards and vocals, and was very influenced by Mike Oldfield between others. He had to leave the band due to deep musical differences with the other members. After then he commited to record a instrumental work playing all the instruments himself, but as far as we know he did not succeed.
Vicente Guillen (bass): Vicente was another ex-member from "Andromeda", the band in which Francisco Javier Garcia also played. Vicente joined the band early in 1990 to fill the position as permanent bass player (which had been provisionally ocuppied by Iñaki Hercilla for almost a year). Vicente was already with the band for several months when the group went to record its first tape, "Restos del Amanecer", but as he was not still much prepared to play the rather complex themes of the band, most of the traks were played by Iñaki Hercilla, and Vicente only played in one of them, "Noviembre". Vicente stayed with the group until 1991, when he left with Francisco Javier Garcia. Soon after he got married and left the music.
Juan Jose "Juanjo" Arribas (guitars, backing vocaks): Juanjo joined Mascarada after Carlos Mostoles left early in 1991. He had previously played in the hard rock band "Transylvania". He stayed with the group for roughtly two months, along one of the most difficult periods of the band, and ultimately he did never played live nor recorded with Mascarada. After leaving the band all contact was lost.
